Early Intervention & Preschool Therapy in Western New York: What Families Can Expect

What is Early Intervention (EI) and preschool therapy? If you’re new to pediatric therapy, the process can feel overwhelming—especially when you’re trying to support your child and navigate services at the same time. At SLC Therapy of WNY, we partner with families across West Seneca and Erie, Niagara, Wyoming & Genesee Counties to provide speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and special education services through Early Intervention and preschool programs.

When should I consider an evaluation? Every child develops at their own pace, but it can help to seek guidance if you notice concerns with communication, play, movement, feeding, attention, or daily routines. Families often reach out when they’re hearing things like “let’s keep an eye on it,” but their gut says they’d like a clearer plan.
    • Speech & language: limited words, difficulty understanding directions, unclear speech, frustration communicating
    • Feeding: very picky eating, gagging, difficulty transitioning textures (when appropriate to discuss with your pediatrician)
    • Fine motor & sensory: trouble using hands for play, challenges with dressing, big reactions to sound/touch, difficulty with transitions
    • Gross motor: delayed sitting/crawling/walking, frequent falls, difficulty with stairs or playground skills
    • Learning & participation: difficulty engaging in routines, following classroom expectations, or building early learning skills
How services typically work (in plain language) While each county and program has its own steps, most families experience a similar flow:
    1. Referral / intake: You share your concerns and your child’s history.
    2. Evaluation: A clinician assesses strengths and needs through play-based activities and caregiver input.
    3. Goals & plan: If your child qualifies, the team builds goals that support everyday routines—home, daycare, and preschool.
    4. Therapy sessions: Services are delivered consistently, with strategies you can use between visits.
    5. Progress updates: Goals are reviewed and adjusted as your child grows.
What makes pediatric therapy effective? The best progress happens when therapy feels practical and supportive—not like “one more thing” on your schedule. Our clinicians focus on:
    • Family-centered coaching so you know what to do in real-life moments
    • Play-based learning that keeps kids motivated and engaged
    • Functional goals that connect to communication, independence, and participation
    • Collaboration across EI and preschool teams to keep everyone aligned
How SLC Therapy of WNY can help We provide:
    • Speech Therapy to support communication, language development, articulation, and (when appropriate) feeding skills
    • Occupational Therapy for fine motor development, sensory processing, daily living skills, and school readiness
    • Physical Therapy to build strength, balance, coordination, and confident movement
    • Special Education Services to support developmental and learning goals within Early Intervention and preschool programs
